01 Nov

Having an online presence nowadays is a complete necessity for any business enterprise and hence is capable of making or breaking its market image. Online presence most commonly and mainly refers to having a customizable website to invite web traffic and enhance search engine rankings.

There are quite a number of tools available which can help us in developing and designing a rich and user friendly website. Drupal is one such tool or technically speaking “a free and open source Content Management System” which is written in PHP and used in at least 1.5% websites*(Source Wikipedia) developed worldwide including blogs, corporate websites and governmental sites as well, such as; New York Observer http://www.observer.com/; Now Public http://www.nowpublic.com/; Harvard University http://www.harvard.edu/; Massachusetts Institute of Technology http://web.mit.edu/; and AOL Corporate http://corp.aol.com/ among many others.

Drupal was first written by Dries Buytaert, a Belgian software programmer as a message board; however it became an open source project in the year 2001, post which its popularity grew by leaps and bounds. Drupal is maintained by a community of over 630,000+ users and developers and is readily available under the terms of GNU (General Public License).

Drupal web designs are considered a better option than any other conventional web designing and web development options owing to the fact that Drupal based websites are more technically advanced. This system enables developing of dynamic websites along with providing support for Web 2.0 applications like AJAX.

This program is extremely beneficial for web designers as they can easily use the administration panel to select the available themes and also prepare titles, slogans or even logos and make up vibrant layouts. Drupal contains some commanding extensions which are known as modules that can help in creating templates with customized panels for a common layout.

Some of the salient features of Drupal web design are given below:

  • Browser Based Interfaces – Facilitates easy modification of website content and updation.
  • Taxonomy Module – Currently, with the easy availability of taxonomy module in Drupal, it is easy to categorize and organize content in a hierarchy which helps in content search.
  • Aggregator – Enables gathering news and articles from different other websites; thereby, making it easy to collect supportive content.
  • Enables generation of search engine friendly URLs (unique resource locator)
  • Comprehensive Reporting Details – This reporting module provides the administrator with the authority to view the performance report of a site which includes rankings, event logs, data etc.
  • Multilingual Support – Drupal system easily supports different languages.

For all the professionals working in the website design industry, Drupal has proved to be an easily adaptable resource for website designing purposes and has found acceptance across all quarters owing to this trait.

HOW TO GET LISTED ON GOOGLE NEWS

19 Jul

This article should begin by answering the question, “why want to get listed on Google news at all?”

There are many advantages to getting listed on Google News.

The obvious ones are traffic and inbound links. The less obvious but equally important ones are:

(a) Credibility: Google News indexes articles from only those sites that it considers informative and reliable. So if your article on your domain comes up in Google News, it fortifies your position as the expert in the field.

(b) Quicker indexing of your website: once your site has gotten into Google News’ radar, it is definitely crawled once a day, at least, or, depending on how many articles you post and how frequently, even twice to thrice per day. So users even on Google organic search (Google Web Search) see fresher content of your website delivered regularly.

So how do we get listed on Google News?

1. Create a separate section on your website for news. It could be www.interactivebees.com/news/ Or it could be http://news.interactivebees.com.

2. On this section of your website, create an overview page that links to inner pages of complete articles.

3. Each article needs to include the name of its author. And there needs to be multiple authors for your site to be considered a news portal (otherwise it would end up more like a blog than like a news site). The news section also needs to have a page listing names of all the authors complete with a small bio.

4. Post news articles as frequently as possible. One article a day is must. But preferred frequency would be two to three articles daily!

5. Article URL’s should seem static and have at least three unique digits.

For example, the Google news crawler will not crawl articles with the following URLs:

www.interactivebees.com/news/article13.html

www. interactivebees.com/getting-indexed-by-google-news.html

It can crawl these pages:

www. interactivebees.com/news/20112005/article.html

www. interactivebees.com/news/getting-indexed-by-google-news/23467.html

6. Your article name will also be the title of your page (as on this blog). Also Articles must have H1/H2-tags.

7. The content of your article has to be unique! Even if you are quoting from somewhere, make sure you cite the reference so the article doesn’t look plagiarised. If you can’t make it through Copyscape, you can never make it through Google News!

8. Articles can’t be too small. Articles with less than 200 characters might not get indexed.

9. And finally, submit the news section of your website to:

http://www.google.com/support/news/bin/request.py?contact_type=recommend&submit=Continue

Or send an e-mail to source-suggestions@google.com

Ethics Of Online Advertising

25 Oct

Online advertising includes wide range of advertising in which some are followed ethically and some are not. Nowadays large chunk of websites use various types of online advertising, which also include flashing banners that generally distracts the user. Some online advertisements show misleading images that are specifically designed to look like error messages from the operating system, rather than advertisements. Websites that ethically practice the use of online advertising for revenue generation frequently do not observe online advertisements that are linked through their websites. Hence, this leads these online advertisements to direct to sites with malicious software or adult material.

There are various types of advertisements used by website operators in the form of online advertising, these are not intended to distract the user and also do not detract from the design & layout of the website. Many big companies are directly contacted by the website owners for the placement of ads, which means the website linked by the online advertisement is legal.

With the excess use of technologies like Adobe Flash in online advertising has led to its blockage by the users in their browsers. Many users have also started disabling browser plug-ins like Adblock or Noscript to get rid of this annoyance.

Revenue models of online advertising

There are various revenue models which are being followed by the portals for online advertising:

CPM (Cost Per Mille)

Cost Per Mille is also known as Cost Per Thousand in which advertisers pay certain amount for the exposure of their message to a particular audience. “Per Mille” means per thousand impressions. Though, some impressions may not be counted such as reload or internal user action.

CPV (Cost Per Visitor)/ CPL (Cost per lead)

In cost per visitor online advertisers pay for the delivery of a targeted visitor to the advertisers website.

CPV (Cost Per View)

In cost per view advertisers generally pays for the every unique user view of an online advertisement or a website. It is primarily used with pop-ups, pop-unders and interstitial ads.

CPC (Cost Per Click)

Cost per click is also known as pay per click in which online advertisers are paid every time, when a user clicks on their listing and is redirected automatically to their website. They only get paid when the listing is clicked on and this system facilitates the advertising specialists to refine their searches and attain information about their domain.

CPA (Cost Per Action)

Cost per action or cost per acquisition is performance based and is very common in the affiliate marketing sector of the business. The publisher takes all the risk involved in the running of an online advertisement in this payment scheme and the advertisers generally pays only for the amount of users who completes a transaction like purchase or sign up.

CPE (Cost Per Engagement)

Cost per engagement is a form of cost per action, which was introduced in March 2008. In CPE model online advertising impressions are free and the advertisers only have to pay only when a user gets connected with their specific ad unit, which is very different from cost-per-impression or cost-per-click models. In this context, engagement can be very well defined as user interacting with an ad in many ways.

Cost Per Conversion

Cost per conversion is known as the cost of attaining a customer and is basically calculated by dividing an entire cost of an ad campaign by the number of conversions. The definition of conversion varies from situation to situation and it is sometimes considered as a lead, sale or purchase.
