It looks like a plot of a Hollywood movie where there are many parties trying to establish their market standing and brand among people and in pursuit of this crown they are offering multiple features and services, this is what is happening in the arena of cloud computing.
After the concept of cloud computing was initially introduced, there was a thought that it was something to do with organizations, small SMEs and SMBs; and common surfers & users of net have no business in it. But actually the story is exactly the opposite.
We all store pictures, photos, documents, files and large chunk of data on our PCs and pen drives but what to do if we encounter a pen drive loss or hard disk crash, our essential documents and information are gone forever resulting in loss of revenue or business. Also, it is not always possible to carry your system with you. To handle these situations, we have cloud.
Everything has become mobile so our ways of living, we all carry smart phones or tablets and want our documents and files on the move. Cloud provides a seamless platform where we can access our information from phones, Tab or portable PCs. Most cloud computing services these days allow its users to sync their documents in real-time and later you can access your files from any device. All you need to do is just drag and drop your info right into the cloud and rest is updated automatically.
Thus, you save time, money, resources and peace of mind.
Well talking about the war, the real war has started among the tech giants of the world who are facing stiff competition from the startups. Let me name a few cloud service providers:
- Google (Google Drive)
- Sky Drive (Microsoft)
- Dropbox
- Sugarsync
- Minus
- Box.net
- Livekive(AVG) and etc.
The most happening and latest cloud war which has started is between Google and Dropbox. Both the companies are leaving no stone in convincing its users that their service is the best. While Dropbox is the most admired and favored cloud service offering its users upto 2GB of free space, Google has gone one step ahead with 5 GB of data storage. Sky Drive from Microsoft is offering 7 GB of cloud storage with the facility to extend upto 25 GB as loyalty bonus.
Well, most of you would argue why Dropbox then, it provides you the facility to extend its storage capacity upto 16 GB through referrals and it has developer ecosystem better than anybody in this league; Dropbox also provide you features where your friends and colleagues can directly access files from your Dropbox via a link. Google is still untested at this stage though. All these features and other awesome apps have launched Dropbox to $5 billion Company in no time.
What’s more, Google Drive offers you other than storage capacity of 5 GB; OCR facility where you can search your documents or PDFs though the keywords present in these documents. This is a powerful feature, we might call.
In case of Sky Drive, you do get the maximum cloud storage and also you can access your documents and files right from your browser; all you need a hotmail account and rest you can directly upload your files and doc from your browser, that’s it.
The above features come for free, but if you want to extend your storage capacity you need to shell out few bucks depending on the space you require. Being a top contender in its domain, Dropbox price band is expensive among the most, but sooner rather than later it will definitely reduce its pricing to survive. Most people argue that Google Drive is a move to kill Dropbox but only time will tell who resist the test of time. But for the time being lets all enjoy their service and wait for result of this ‘star war’.
